We’ll be kicking off this year’s Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Festival at Northern Quarter.
It all kicks off in the evening from 8pm with the Dan Nicholas Band.
Guitarist, composer, arranger and lyricist Dan Nicholas is the musical director of Equinox. He grew up in New York City and New Jersey, and at the age of 18 he began to study with the world renowned jazz pianist and educator, Dr. Barry Harris. Nicholas was inspired to move to The Netherlands in 2001 after meeting master pianist Frans Elsen, with whom he worked from 2008 – 2011.
Dan Nicholas has performed with such jazz luminaries as Barry Harris, Grant Stewart, Gary Smulyan, Benjamin Herman, Dado Moroni, Peter Beets, Greg Hutchinson and Gene Jackson. He is also the leader of Equinox Jazz Promotions (EJP), an organization dedicated to programming and promoting an extremely high level of jazz events in the Netherlands.
The music continies from 9.30pm with the Sheryl Bailey & Kathy Dyson Band.
Sheryl Bailey is an American jazz guitarist and teaches guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Sheryl started playing guitar at 13. At first she was primarily interested in rock music, but she discovered jazz after hearing guitarist Wes Montgomery on the radio. She attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, and after college she taught music at Towson State University in Baltimore. In 1998 she moved to New York City to pursue a career as a performer.
Kathy Dyson is a jazz guitarist, composer, educator and researcher, living in Yorkshire. She performs with and writes for an octet, duo, trio and quartet playing original music and standards. She regularly plays with Deirdre Cartwright in the duo ‘Emily Remembered’ dedicated to the memory of Emily Remler, and also performs in the duo Inside Outside with husband John.
